The speaker is Jane McGonigal and I just love her. She's got a PhD Performance Studies and is a game developer. She has long been a proponent of gaming and has been trying to convince everyone for years that the world would be a better place if everyone would just play more games. She put her money where her mouth is a few years ago when she suffered a severe concussion and almost died and made up a game to help her heal.
This video is from a TED Talk lecture where she challenges the audience to earn 7 1/2 extra minutes on their lives by playing a game with her. The video is 18 minutes, but well worth the watch.
PROMPT:
How do you feel about what Jane McGonigal has to say about games helping people to live better lives?
Wow! What an amazing speech presented by Jane. This was a perfect time for me to listen to this video. I didn't think it would do me any good to watch, but it certainly has shown me positivity in the things I can do for my life. I had just downloaded the the game app and am looking forward to what it can do to help better my life in areas I am dealing discomfort in. Great Vlog!
ReplyDeleteI feel like its a trick to keep listening to her story because the audience probably doesn't believe her but still listen because it could be true. it's psychology, tricking the brain

ReplyDeleteIn a way, I can see where Jane is coming from. Games probably won't give an individual 7.5 more minutes on their life, but it can help make them feel less stress or a slight bit happier. I know that today, games help teenagers and adults in college or in the workplace feel better after a long day of hard work when they can relax and play a game of 2k or something. Games also bring friends and families together when you play games on the Wii like Just Dance or play a simple game of uno. However, like maymz said, "it's psychology". Jane McGonigal is using ethos and logos to reel us in.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid who always was playing the game i can see what she's saying because they are entertaining, but its other things in this world to do other than spending extra time playing games. Time can buy money but money can't buy time.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with a game giving you 7 extra minutes of life. I'm not going to sit there, know, and say, "Oh wow, I am so glad that I have those extra 7 minutes from playing that game!" Personally, I love video games and plenty of other kids do, too. That definitely would be an added bonus to all of us video game lovers.
ReplyDeleteJane gave an amazing speech, i agree will several things she had to say. I believe that games make you happier, and relief stress, also help patients who have any illness. However im not sure about the extra 7 minutes of life.
