Sports Controversy: Lowering Rims for Women's Hoops

Many sports fans around the U.S. have started a huge debate on rather the rims in women's basketball should be lowered or kept the same. There are two sides to this debate and both feel strongly about their opinions. One side says that by doing this, this is degrading women to say that they can't be as good as men. The other side says this should happen due to the fact that it would make the game for women's basketball more entertaining and more equal since WNBA players are normally shorter then the average height of an NBA player. My opinion is that they shouldn't lower the goal for the simple fact that it would take time for the players to adjust and the taller players of the WNBA such as Brittney Griner would dominate against the rest of the league. Also it would just cause more controversy and diminish women by saying they can't be as good as the men are. I don't see a point in changing this just to make the WNBA more entertaining.

Do you believe they should lower the rim for women basketball?
By doing so is this saying women can't be as good as men in sports?

  1. I believe women are actually smaller in size than men in general. Therefore, the rim should be lower to accommodate these general heights. No one can control how tall they are when they're birthed! It's all in genetics, not about who is as good as who. Smh

  2. Generally, I know that women are shorter than men so why not lower the rims? I don't feel that it is degrading or insulting to do so but rather just more reasonable. However, it is a good point to think about how players will adjust to the rim height changes. Should we try and "fix something that wasn't necessarily broken?" The only people who should be the judges of that is who the changes will affect: the players.

  3. No matter how high the rim is, or how low the rim is. You don't need time to adjust to it, unless you are new to shooting. I am a shooting coach myself, and it is all in what you are looking at and how you go about your form. I think that the WNBA would be more exciting if this were to take place! I would love it. Lowering a rim is for entertainment, right? Isn't that the argument? If not, don't do it if it "degrades" women. Also, men will always be the head, it is the way they are built. Comparing the two isn't necessarily possible; especially, when it comes to sports where genders are divided.

  4. I believe they should lower the rims and I don't think that will be trying to say that women aren't as good as men. Facts are, women are naturally smaller framed than men so I think that adjusting the rim to their height will be fair and more entertaining.
