While trying to look up topics that
interested me for my blog post, I decided to think about something most people
love and I ended up at the topic: rollercoasters. I was shocked to see that
there was so much conspiracy surrounding the rides, especially in recent times
with all the advances in technology that are being made every day.
When I was younger, no one could
get me to go on a rollercoaster at all. I would be called a “scared-y cat” or a
“baby” but I didn’t care because in my mind I just knew I out of all people
would plummet to my death if I got on one. This lasted for so many years. I
even got tired of being called names and tried to go on one with my cousins,
then after being strapped in and ready for take off, quickly notified the ride attendant
to take me off. (That definitely didn’t help with the name calling.) I
eventually got over my fears as I got older and figured, “Hey, I can die just
walking across the street so why not enjoy a ride on a rollercoaster?” But are
my thoughts warranted? After researching I am unsure if I made the right
decision to ride these rides.
“A
tragic accident at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas left one woman
dead, after she fell from the Texas Giant, billed as the tallest steel hybrid
roller coaster in the world. Rosy Esparza, 61 who fell from the ride shortly
after it started, reportedly had complained to the attendant that she did not
believe her safety restraint was locked properly in place.” –news.discovery.com.
This just happened in 2013, which was only 3 years ago… so what if what
happened to her can happen to me? Ok, I may be a little dramatic but just the possibility
of it happening slightly makes me scared, but then I think of all the
possibilities of injury I encounter everyday.
“A recent study by the
Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Research Institute at Nationwide
Children's Hospital found from 1990 to 2010, 92,885 children under the age of
18 were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for amusement ride-related injuries.
Most of those injuries happened in the summer months, said Tracy Mehan, manager
for translational research for the Center.” This got me thinking that if children’s rides,
that don’t contain nearly as much height and movement, cause so much injury,
how can adult rides not be dangerous as well. While searching for the answer, I
found that there is no definite one. According to most sources, most accidents
are not mechanical and are very rare. Additionally, it is said to ride with
caution when attempting to ride any rollercoaster and If you aren’t comfortable
or don’t feel secure to get off. I still will most likely ride rollercoasters
but was still interested in the information I found regarding them.
Do you think it is safe to ride rollercoaster?
Do you know someone who is afraid to ride rollercoasters? What
is their reasoning?
I felt the exact same way about rollercoaster rides. But this past summer i ended up being peer pressured into getting on to one of the highest and scariest rides at Six Flags and since then i been riding rides like its nothing.
ReplyDeleteI remember the first ride I got on when I was a kid, i was scared but my older cousin mad me ride it. After riding that roller coaster, going to amusement parks is one of my favorite things to do.
DeleteI think it is completely safe to ride a roller-coaster anything with technology can be dangerous in some form of way, but if all of the equipment and parts to the coaster is up to date it should be safe to ride. I love riding roller-coasters.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I was when my family and I first went to a fun park. My dad would always call me a "chump". But when I got on it actually wasn't that bad. But since so many accidents has been happening, I will only ride a few.
ReplyDeleteI personally LOVE roller-coasters and always have since I was a kid. Til this day one of my favorite things to do it go to different amusement parks. I believe they are safe to ride however my mother is afraid of them because she doesn't like how fast and high they make roller-coasters.
ReplyDeleteMy eleventh grade year I went to Kings Dominion for the first time. My palms were sweaty and a wave of uneasiness resided in me as I boarded my first roller-coaster ride. It was so fun! They are as safe as they can be and sometimes your just going to have to take that risk. My father hates roller coaster rides but he went with me one time and he had fun too. Face your fears!
ReplyDeleteI beleive rollarcoasters are safe, an accident can happen anywhere and they are fairl uncommon at major ammusement parks. With that being said, I am still afraid to ride the big drop.
ReplyDeleteI love roller coasters and I believe that they are safe. If they were not safe I don't think that a company would allow the public to use them if they weren't because they would get sued if something did happen.
ReplyDeleteI also love rollercoasters.Im the friend you can take to the amusement park that will get on every single ride. Though,I will say, rollercoasters look extremely dangerous. Im not afraid of the attraction itself, but the thought of the rollercoaster breaking down never leaves my mind unless I have rode that ride more than once.
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe but personally, certain roller coasters I will not get on just because the height of it. My mom is a person that doesn't like to ride roller coasters because she does not like heights.

ReplyDeleteRoller coasters are just exciting amusements! Just about everything in this world is a risk factor. Think about it, when a person gets behind the wheel of a car everyday, their life is at risk. If roller coasters were not intended to be safe, they would not be in existence. Terrible things happen everyday from the non-expectancy of a car being caught on fire, to a roller coaster falling off its track from mechanical problems.
ReplyDeleteI am guilty of being an adrenaline junkie so I enjoy coasters. Though I have my preferences of which ones I'd ride. For example I refuse to ride any wooden roller coasters. I honestly shy away from them because don't seem stable.
ReplyDeleteIn the back of my mind I'm thinking "this roller coaster could fall apart" but I get on it anyway. I love riding roller coasters even though they look a bit dangerous. Its just something about that adrenaline rush you get from riding.
