Real R&B is dying in the music industry today and its seems as if it's never going to be the soulful music that it used to be back in the 80's, 90's, and the early 2000's. In the current generation, we have turned our heads to that "whack mainstream auto-tuned music" as our source of singing which is beyond terrible. Rarely any artist can put a track out today with strictly natural vocals and expect it to break any charts. What happened to the Luther Vandross's or the Smokey Robinson's, even the Erykah Badu's and Lauryn Hill's? It sucks that this generation will never get a taste of the real R&B and vocals that people like myself really enjoyed. With that being said it is one group which is OVO by Drake, that have a huge arsenal of talented vocalist from Canada but other than that, there really isn't much. We still Have Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and i guess Beyonce for you ladies but it's more pop being produced than R&B. And if you haven't noticed a lot of the old artist like John Legend and Usher are maintaining their relevancy but they aren't half as popular as they used to be. I hope there is an artist out there that can save or bring back the R&B genre and personally i think it'll be Tory Lanez because he samples a lot of old school R&B or some underground Soundcloud artist.Do you think R&B is dying?
Who would you still consider an R&B artist?
Who is or was your Favorite?
Usher Confessions Album is the epitome of R&B and I don't think anyone will be able to top that in my lifetime. I think R&B now is definitely not the same but isn't completely dead. One person just needs to come and revive it; I just don't know who it will be.
ReplyDeleteThey were playing some classic R&B at my dentist's office when we were there the other day and two older gentlemen start waxing nostalgic and saying almost the same things you did. I think music, like everything cultural, changes and evolves, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Just give it some time and the pendulum will swing back to the more classic sound, like things of this nature usually do. As Serena pointed out, all it will take is one person to make it take off again.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement that R&B is dying. It is defiantly isn't nearly as popular as it used to be. I remember as a little kid singing all of the R&B songs in the car. It is sad because this generation doesn't have a wide variety of soft music we can vibe to like our parents did. I would consider drake as a wonderful versatile R&B artist. He is amazing to me and therefor my favorite. He makes music to please a lot of different fans and to fit almost every situation we go through as humans. He has upbeat music and soft emotional music.
ReplyDeletei wouldnt say R&B is dying, but evolving. if you look back on music in the pass, it is forever changing. yes, it is not exactly what it use to be but old heads say the same thing as music starts to evolve. nothing is the way it use to be and its never going to be that way. we are going to talk trash about our childrens music the same way our parents do ours simply because its not what it use to be. i think R&B artist are starting to branch out and incorporate other genres into their music so that they attract more than one type of audience which is smart. there are still R&B artist that pay homage to old artist and try to incorporate old R&B, but nothing can stay the same. stagnation isn't good. music will continue to evolve.
ReplyDeleteI believe that R&B is dying out, now a days people are more drawn to that 808 rap music, Torey Lanez is one artist I can stay is still carrying on the R&B name.
ReplyDeleteR&B isn't dying its just evolving and eventually will come back around to be the old soulful music we use to hear just like fashion.

ReplyDeleteI think that R&B is dead in the community period. However, I personally love R&B, and can listen to it all day. Some people judge me, telling me that I am forever in my feelings; but it's just what excites me other than music this generation now produces. Come to think about it, the reason we may think R&B is dead is because the radio stations we listen to just don't play it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI believe that R&B is dying just for the simple fact that the artists today are taking over. Me personally I don't like rap today because some of it just doesn't make sense. But anyways I love R&B music it will never die in my world.
ReplyDeleteR&B definitely isn't how it used to be because the style has changed and so have the artists. However I don't think it has died out. A few of my top R&B artists from today's era: Anthony Hamilton, Eric Benet, and Neyo just to name a few, but bottom line R&B will never be as good as it originally was.
ReplyDeleteI don't think R&B is the same as it was back in the day, it definitely has changed, today music is now more blunt and upfront with what they want, and back in the day they were more discrete with things like talking about sex. I do think that R&B will get back to how it was back in the day but it will never be the same.
ReplyDeleteI believe R&B is dying because now you don't have to have talent to become a star. You don't have to be able to sing, all they do is throw auto tie on your voice in the studio and tweak if until it sounds okay. My favorite R&B artist will always be Jazmine Sullivan. Her voice is so soulful and pure and her music I've always been able to relate to.
