Unless you’re over the age of 30,
or living under a rock, you’ve undoubtedly heard, or at least heard of, Kanye
West’s new album, The Life of Pablo. Which was originally called So Help Me God, before that, Waves, and
before that, Swish. These frequent name changes were just one of the many tactics used to create massive hype surrounding this album. I was one of the people
consumed in the hype. As a matter a fact before the albums release one of my
friends asked me “Tj, what if this album isn’t even that good.” In which I
replied, “That’s literally impossible.” With all of this being said, when I finally
sunk my teeth into this album, I was left not completely full.
When
I heard the first song “Ultra Light Beam,” I was extremely excited to hear the
rest of the album with the extravagant harmonious choir background singing for
Kanye as it builds up as the song goes along. But then the second song came
along, and I knew I was in trouble. The song Father Stretch my Hands Pt. 1”
started off with the build up of MetroBoomin’s phenomenal beat and rapper Future’s infamous
saying “If young Metro don’t trust you,” which was sadly, most people’s favorite
part of the song. After this, Kanye opens up the song with an extremely weak
line that is in excusable, “Now if I f*ck this model, And she just bleached her
a**hole, And I get bleach on my T-shirt, Imma feel like an a**hole.” That has
to be one of the most laughable Kanye West lines that I’ve ever heard. The next
song “Pt. 2,” sounds like a weak attempt at trying to emulate Future and Drake’s
album “What a Time to be Alive,” as unknown rapper, Designer, makes an appearance on the song who sounds almost exactly like Future.
Now don’t get me wrong, this album
did have some good songs, such as 30 hours, No More Parties in L.A., Real
Friends, Feedback, Wolves, FML, and I even liked Freestyle 4. ,
There were also songs that I dislike, such as Highlights, Famous, and especially
Pt. 2 just do not go together. An album is supposed to have a specific theme,
or set of ideas. With the exception that theme of the album is to purposely
just be a mess, it’s not a good album to me.
Another issue I have with this
album is the filler. Skits such as silver surfer, low lights, and the second
half of 30 hours could’ve easily been cut from this album
After reading this, you all will
probably think that I’m one of those people who hate Kanye and everything about
him. This is not the case, in fact I am a huge fan of all of Kanye’s album, I even
though Yeezus was descent. I even admire snobbish and cocky personality as well
as his fashion sense. It’s just that for all of the hype surround this album, I
thought it was going to be as genius as albums he’s done in the past which is
basically before and including My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
If I had to give this album a
score, I’d give it a 6/10. This album contains good songs, but that just do not
go together and sound under developed almost.
What did you think about this album?
Also, don’t be afraid to tell me how stupid this review is, how
I’m dead wrong, and how Kanye is a God who can do no wrong.
I used to be a big Kanye fan, I still listen to his music every now and then. I have heard good things and bad things about his newest album although I haven't heard it for myself yet.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with Ultralight Beam, 30 hours, FML, his freestyle, as well as the other good ones you listed. I definitely think Kanye could have done better given his albums in the past, but this is a new Kanye we are talking about. This is Yeezus. His album fits him, today, perfectly. His lines were not weak in my opinion. He is extremely gifted.

ReplyDeleteI think Kanye is a great musical artist. However, he has gotten a little too arrogant with it in my eyes. I miss the old Kanye, the one who used to rap real life (right after his tragic car accident). But, I guess the money and the fame does change some people. The album was pretty good, but now he mixes a whole bunch of different sounds in one song. I guess that's all of his "creative ideas" in one. LOL
ReplyDeleteI like Kanye West as an artist but i really prefer his old music over his old. Don't get me wrong The Life of Pablo was a decent album and all but personally the album is not in my top 5 for him. And Yeezus was his worst Album!
